Super Bowl week!

Super Bowl LIX is this Sunday at 6:30 PM ET on FOX. (And the game is available for free in 4K on Tubi!). Hereā€™s the uniform combo youā€™ll be seeing for the Chiefs and Eagles:

Super Bowl Opening Night was last night, and among the highlights was Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes saying theyā€™re fine with being ā€œvillainsā€ if thatā€™s what winning football games means.

This weekā€™s Consigliere Corner shares a few things to watch in Super Bowl LIX. And make sure you check out the game pick article on wolfsports.com this Thursday.

Head coach matchup
Chiefs HC Andy Reid and Eagles HC Nick Sirianni again have an opportunity to hoist the Lombardi Trophy after Reid did it a couple of years ago. Based on the history, perhaps Chiefs fans should be feeling good about the chances of a repeat performance. Four times head coaches have had a Super Bowl rematch: Chuck Noll vs. Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson vs. Marv Levi, Tom Coughlin vs. Bill Belichick, and Reid vs. Kyle Shanahan.

In each of those four instances, the coach that won the first matchup went on to win the secondā€”including, as we saw last year, with Reidā€™s Chiefs (great with the extra week to prepare) beating the Niners again.

The Saquon factor
Of course, in this Super Bowl rematch, superstar RB Saquon Barkleyā€”a massive steal by the Eagles in free agency after the Giants let him walk to the division rivalā€”is now on Philadelphiaā€™s side. Playing behind an elite offensive line, Barkley has an insane seven 60-yard touchdown runs this season, which is unsurprisingly a single-season NFL record. If Barkley gets a crease, heā€™s gone. And not only his ability to score in an instantā€”but also the resources the Chiefs defense must bring to stop himā€”make him an obvious X-factor on Sunday as the Eagles look to have a repeat performance offensively when they scored 35 points in their recent Super Bowl loss.

Steve Spagnuolo delivers
Speaking of the Eagles offense led by QB Jalen Hurts, who had an outstanding performance in Super Bowl LVII, you can bet Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo is letting his guys hear it all week and telling them they cannot let that happen again. Whether Kansas City has the pieces to slow down Hurts, Barkley, and a stacked group of receiving weapons headlined by two premier weapons in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith is another story, but the Chiefs are probably underrated on all three levels of the defense with the way they consistently perform at a high level as arguably the primary driving force behind back-to-back titles.

Spagnuolo is the only coordinator in NFL history to win four Super Bowls (one with the Giants, stunning the unbeaten Patriots in Super Bowl XLII). He gets the most out of his unit time of year.

Bets to consider
No one really knows how a given game is going to turn out, but a bunch of the receiving lines look low. Most notably, DeVonta Smithā€™s over/under receiving yards being set at 51.5 is very intriguing. Smith had 100 yards in the Big Game a couple of years ago, and Philadelphia might need to open up the passing attack if Kansas City tries to stuff the run. On the other side, JuJu Smith-Schuster at over 15.5 receiving yards could be a hit after he had catches for 31 yards and 29 yards last weekā€”potentially gaining the trust of Patrick Mahomes at the right time and attacking Vic Fangioā€™s defense where itā€™s more vulnerable.

For more of a longshot, Hurts at +650 to score the first touchdown of the game stands out. If Philly gets the ball first, itā€™s easy to envision the drive ending with a Brotherly Shove. Also, both Hurts and Barkley ran for three touchdowns in the NFC title game. Hurts is +3400 to do that again on Sunday.

Also, keep an eye on Super Bowl hero Brandon Grahamā€”returning from a torn tricepsā€”planning to play in this game to give a potential boost off the edge for Philadelphia.

šŸ‘€ Chip Kelly headlines big coordinator moves

As 2025 coaching staffs come together, the Pete Carroll-led Raiders made a huge addition by getting Chip Kellyā€”fresh off helping Ryan Day win a national title with Ohio State in his lone year as the OC thereā€”as the teamā€™s offensive coordinator. The former Eagles and 49ers HC is reportedly making $6 million per year, the most in the league for a coordinator. Meanwhile, Vegas re-signed Patrick Graham as the DC.

More assistant coaching moves in the past week:

Meanwhile, with only the Saints remaining among HC position, Mike McCarthy is turning his attention to the 2026 hiring cycle.

šŸ¤” Garrett and Kupp on the move?

The Rams are trading Super Bowl LVI MVP Cooper Kupp, the former triple crown winner at receiver announced last night. Kupp said in a statement: ā€œI donā€™t agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA.ā€ Durability has of course been the issue for the 2017 third-round pick of the Rams, and heā€™ll turn 32 years old this summer. But Kupp says heā€™s as healthy as ever and is ā€œlooking forward to playing elite football for years to come.ā€ Kupp has two years left on his deal, and a team acquiring him would have around a $20 million cap hit each season unless his deal is restructured. Overall, it might not cost a ton to get the former All-Pro, but weā€™d think plenty of teams will be interested in adding a reliable weapon.

2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett has requested a trade from the Browns.

As the statement reads, Garrett is basically saying heā€™s not confident in the organization to compete for a Super Bowl. Obviously, the Deshaun Watson trade and contract was a massive miscalculation by Clevelandā€™s current regime, which holds the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and could be getting a lot more ammo by trading Garrett. However, the word is that the Browns will not grant Garrettā€™s trade requestā€”almost certainly as a negotiating tactic while looking to get as much as they can in a trade.

Reading Garrettā€™s statement, heā€™s either totally sincere in wanting out of Cleveland, or heā€™s taking a very hard stance and using it as a negotiating tactic to become the highest-paid defender in the league. The Bills, Commanders, Eagles, and Chargers are among the teams speculated as potential landing spots for the All-Pro pass rusher.
