Starting QB suddenly uncertain for 2025

Good morning! The 2025 NFL Draft is next week, and there’s still major uncertainty on how things are expected to play out—but this week’s Consigliere Corner includes one player we like to be a Round 1 pick despite the odds.

🩼 Derek Carr’s 2025 status uncertain

Out of nowhere, it was reported that Saints QB Derek Carr is dealing with a shoulder issue that puts his availability for 2025 in doubt.

Keep in mind: The Saints can get out of Carr’s contract next year with a post-June 1 designation and major cap savings. New Orleans holds the No. 9 pick in next week’s draft.

The past couple of years, there were very easy NFL Draft bets we recommended on wolfsports.com. In 2023, over 1.5 RBs drafted in Round 1 (basically, for Jahmyr Gibbs—proven to be a total stud and a great pick by the Lions—to be a first-round pick) was at around +250. Last year, the odds were against Bo Nix for being a first-rounder, with plus-money odds. Both were incredibly easy hits we felt great about, with both not only going in the top 32 but getting drafted No. 12 overall.

Opinions of mainstream media and groupthink on social media can lead to easy-to-spot values like that. This year, while we don’t feel quite as strongly about it (and don’t expect him to go as high as No. 12), our favorite 2025 NFL Draft bet is Jalen Milroe to be a first-round pick. It’s currently at +145 odds.

Why do we like Milroe in Round 1? He is one of 17 prospects who accepted an invite to Green Bay for draft. The NFL has apparently sent invitations with the intention of not having players waiting around to be picked. The Alabama QB has unsurprisingly been impressing teams with his interviews and personality. Milroe is the type of talent teams will take a shot on, especially in a draft seen as having not a ton of high-upside prospects.

Like Gibbs and Nix (a very bad look for the doubters, looking back), Milroe is one of the most criticized prospects, leading to his Round 1 odds being lower than they probably should be.

šŸ‘ Patrick Peterson’s retirement leads player news

Three-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl CB Patrick Peterson has officially retired after 13 NFL seasons.

  • Peterson was selected No. 5 overall by the Cardinals in the insanely stacked 2011 NFL Draft and lived up to his status as a top-five pick.

  • The former LSU star was also a prolific returner when utilized there, with four punt return touchdowns as a rookie.

  • Peterson was one of the greatest DBs of his era, and he was named to the NFL All-Decade Team of the 2010s.

The Dolphins and CB Jalen Ramsey are mutually exploring trade options.

QBs back with 2023 squads: 2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Joe Flacco is back with the Browns as their latest QB addition. The Seahawks added Drew Lock to their QB room, joining Sam Darnold—the two have known each other since high school.

More signings include an intriguing WR addition made by the defending champion Eagles:

šŸ“° More NFL news and notes

Former LSU WR and draft prospect WR Kyren Lacy died of an apparent suicide during a police chase. Lacy was facing previous charges stemming from a fatal accident last December.

There’s buzz over an Instagram story posted by T.J. Watt, who is entering the final year of his contract with the Steelers.

The NFL is not expected to make the Chiefs or any other team a permanent fixture for Christmas Day games, instead limiting holiday game traditions to the Lions and Cowboys on Thanksgiving.

Raiders star Maxx Crosby has been named the assistant GM of the football program at his alma mater Eastern Michigan.

Legal troubles: The NFL has requested the 911 audio of a call Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill’s wife made during a domestic dispute. Texas WR draft prospect Isaiah Bond turned himself in for a sexual assault warrant and was released on bond.

Fantasy alert: Cardinals QB Kyler Murray tells PHNX Cardinals that he needs to run more in 2025.

Buccaneers GM Jason Licht expects fewer draft trades due to the nature of a solid all-around 2025 NFL Draft class. Remember, all 32 teams currently hold their own first-round pick for the first time since the 1970 merger.
