The new NFL league year doesn’t begin until next month, but teams are already making moves.
🐬 New regime in Miami kicks off rebuild
The Dolphins are clearly entering a new era under GM Jon-Eric Sullivan and HC Jeff Hafley, as the organization didn’t waste much time by releasing WR Tyreek Hill, WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, G James Daniels, and LB Bradley Chubb—with the moves clearing up over $56 million in cap space for 2026. Hill is of course the headlining release as an eight-time Pro Bowl selection with Kansas City and Miami, and he will now be an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career. The question for Hill will obviously be his health after suffering a dislocated knee and torn ACL at the end of September, but Hill is free to sign with a team at any time and says he plans to continue his career.
The moves for the Dolphins thus far didn’t include the expected departure of QB Tua Tagovailoa, but a trade is clearly the preferred option for the team—as a release would create the largest dead cap hit in NFL history ($99.2 million before June 1). RB De’Von Achane (set to be a free agent in 2027) and WR Jaylen Waddle (in trade talks at last year’s deadline) are logical candidates to be moved via trade in the coming weeks.
Bottom line: Miami is tearing things down, but Sullivan and Hafley seem like the type to attempt a quick, “competitive” rebuild similar to what the Lions accomplished under GM Brad Holmes and HC Dan Campbell. The same kind of turnaround is easier said than done, though, and the Dolphins would need to hit on their eventual choice at quarterback and a bunch of draft picks (like Detroit did) for that to be a reality.
Also, NFL free agent rankings should probably be held off—as there are always big releases before the start of the new league year.
