There are a bunch of high-impact injuries around the NFL, including to Bengals QB Joe Burrow, but we’ll start with a recap of Week 2—headlined by a Super Bowl LIX rematch.
🏈 NFL Week 2 results
The Eagles went into Arrowhead and beat the Chiefs, dropping Kansas City to 0-2 for the first time since 2014—HC Andy Reid’s second year with the organizationtion. A lot has been made of the Brotherly Shove QB sneak play, but the biggest moment from the game was a would-be fourth-quarter TD that went off TE Travis Kelce’s hands and was intercepted by Eagles rookie S Andrew Mukuba. As the Eagles were in the victory formation to end the victory, Eagles QB Jalen Hurts quickly shut down trash talk from Chiefs DT Chris Jones.
Week 2 began with another dominant performance by the Packers, who put up 404 yards compared to the Commanders’ 230 yards in a Thursday Night Game not as close as the 27-18 score might indicate. Packers TE Tucker Kraft posted over 100 yards in a big night in a balanced offensive attack under Matt LaFleur.
Detroit blew out Chicago in Ben Johnson’s return, with the Lions offense bouncing back in a major way in a 52-21 win. Jared Goff joined Tom Brady (8), Drew Brees (6), and Peyton Manning (5) as the only QBs in NFL history to lead five 50-point games, and WR Amon-Ra St. Brown scored three TD while WR Jameson Williams put up Randy Moss numbers. While Lions fans booed and cursed out their former OC, Goff said he didn’t like that for someone who did a lot for them.
The Colts are 2-0 for the first time since 2009—and they’re the first team in the Super Bowl era without a punt in the first two games of the season. They beat Denver on a last-second FG by Spencer Shrader coming after Indy got another shot on a very questionable leverage call negating a missed 60-yarder and setting up a 45-yard attempt. But QB Daniel Jones is playing outstanding for Indy, and Jonathan Taylor was a force with 215 total yards and a TD.
The Falcons flew around at Minnesota on Sunday night, with the defense recording six sacks and four takeaways in a 22-6 victory capped by rookie S Xavier Watts’ first career INT. The Vikings have had one good quarter of offense through two games, which obviously isn’t the standard under Kevin O’Connell—with frustration evident all around. There’s more on new QB J.J. McCarthy below.
In the MNF doubleheader, the Bucs defeated the Texans on a late TD by RB Rachaad White, while QB Justin Herbert was sharp again as the Chargers handled the Raiders, 20-9, behind a stifling defense—though EDGE Khalil Mack left with an elbow injury.
Other Week 2 results:
Cowboys 40, Giants 37: In one of the craziest games you’ll see, Giants QB Russell Wilson threw for 450 yards and three TD—but Dallas won with Brandon Aubrey becoming the first K in history with a game-tying FG with no time in regulation and a game-winning FG with no time in OT.
Seahawks 31, Steelers 17: WR DK Metcalf’s first TD for Pittsburgh came against his former team, but Seattle got a road W helped in part by recovering a kickoff for a TD.
Bills 30, Jets 10: MVP QB Josh Allen suffered a nose injury that caused him to leak blood, but thankfully he says he’s OK and just missed a few plays in a dominant Bills victory where RB James Cook starred.
Patriots 33, Dolphins 27: Antonio Gibson had a fourth-quarter KR TD immediately after the Dolphins took a punt to the house, helping the Pats get a rare early-season win at Miami.
Bengals 31, Jaguars 27: In a sloppy, high-scoring game where Joe Burrow left early due to his toe injury, the Bengals won on a QB sneak by Jake Browning with under 20 seconds remaining.
Rams 33, Titans 19: The first career TD for No. 1 pick Cameron Ward was stellar, but the Rams were too much and improve to 2-0 ahead of a matchup with the Eagles.
49ers 26, Saints 21: QB Mac Jones was very good in his first start for Kyle Shanahan, throwing for 279 yards and three TD—including a 42-yarder to WR Jauan Jennings in the fourth quarter.
Ravens 41, Browns 17: Cleveland stopped RB Derrick Henry (11 carries, 23 yards), but QB Lamar Jackson lit them up for four touchdowns as the Baltimore defense forced a couple of turnovers.
Cardinals 27, Panthers 22: Carolina shockingly made it interesting with a late comeback and onside kick recovery, but Arizona improved to 2-0 in a crowded NFC West.
