Eagles decimate three-peat attempt

The Eagles are Super Bowl champions! Now buckle up for what could be a wild NFL offseason.

šŸ¦… Eagles dominate Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX

With the first-ever Super Bowl three-peat on the line for the Chiefs, the Eagles dominated the Big Game in a 40-22 blowout that wasnā€™t as close as the final score might indicate. The first half of the game was 24-23ā€”not points vs. points, but points vs. yards, as Philadelphia scored more points than the total yards Kansas City had in the first 30 minutes.

While the Chiefs did a great job of containing superstar RB Saquon Barkley (25 carries for 57 yards), Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts (17/22, 221 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, one interception, 72 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown) and the passing game stepped up, with premier WRs A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith both catching touchdowns.

Defensively, the Eagles didnā€™t send more than four rushers at all against Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, but they still sacked Mahomes six times (most in his career) and forced two first-half interceptions (including a pick-six by rookie CB Cooper DeJean on his birthday) putting KC in a hole. Mahomes held the ball longer than he has all season (3.24 seconds per throw), and he looked uncomfortable and simply didnā€™t play wellā€”and to his credit, the three-time Super Bowl champion took blame for the loss.

šŸ¦¬ NFL Honors: Josh Allen wins MVP

Most Valuable Player: Bills QB Josh Allen won a tight MVP race with a handful of worthy candidates, most notably beating out Ravens QB Lamar Jackson with 27 first-place votes compared to Jacksonā€™s 23. Just 4.17% of Allenā€™s plays ended in a sack or turnover in 2024 (the best mark since 1970), playing at an extremely high level for a team many said would take a step back following offseason cap cuts. Allen gave a great MVP acceptance speech, and the Bills posted his emotional reaction to an MVP video from Oishei Childrenā€™s Hospital patients heā€™s gotten to know.

The other 2024 NFL awards:

Walter Payton Man of the Year: And Jaguars DL Arik Armstead won the NFLā€™s Walter Payton Man of the Year.

Message to the NFL? After being passed on last offseason and taking the North Carolina job this coaching cycle, Bill Belichick wore his eight Super Bowl rings to NFL Honors.

šŸ‘ 2025 Hall of Fame Class

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025 was revealed, headlined by the long waits for CB Eric Allen and WR Sterling Sharpe finally ending. Theyā€™ll be joined by DE Jared Allen and TE Antonio Gates.

Former Panthers LB Luke Kuechly surprisingly did not make it as a first-ballot HOFer, and former Giants QB Eli Manning (less surprisingly) didnā€™t make it in his first attempt. Next year, Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, and Frank Gore are among first-time eligible players.

šŸ“° More NFL news and notes

Rest in Peace: Bears owner Virginia Halas McCaskey passed away at 102, and former player and coach Dick Jauron died at 74.

Calling it a career: S Micah Hyde and K Mason Crosby have officially retired from the NFL.

We could see a lot of movement among players and draft positioning this offseason, and early news includes:

NFLPA pushes back against 18 games: NFLPA Executive Director Lloyd Howell says ā€œno oneā€ wants to play an 18th game despite Commissioner Roger Goodell recently mentioning the likelihood of expanding the schedule.

Latest coaching moves: The Jaguars hired Vikings assistant Grant Udinski as their OC and Shane Waldron in a role; longtime coach Gus Bradley is joining the 49ers staff; two-time DC Joe Woods is on Pete Carrollā€™s Vegas staff; Ken Dorsey will be part of the new Cowboys staff; former Texas HC Charlie Strong is the Bucsā€™ new DL coach; and the Bills fired ST coordinator Matthew Smiley.

The Jets are hiring former Vikings GM Rick Spielman, who advised the team on their HC and GM search, in a front office role. The Jaguars signed Team President Mark Lamping to an extension through 2030.

Notable media notes from Super Bowl week: Broncos HC Sean Payton says the team is looking for a ā€œjokerā€ on offense, preferably at RB or TE; Packers RB Josh Jacobs says the team needs a No. 1 WR, which didnā€™t seem to go over well with teammates; former Rams RB Todd Gurley says former Patriots players have told him Super Bowl LIII was their easiest game.

Knuckles: Actor Idris Elba (the voice of Knuckles) gave respect to the Lions by wearing a David Montgomery jersey.

President Trump attended Super Bowl LIX, somehow becoming the first sitting U.S. President to attend the Big Game.

Weā€™ll have a ton of coverage about the NFL offseason in the coming weeks, but this weekā€™s Consigliere Corner hits on keys for a few teams heading into 2025.

Buffalo Bills
After seeing what the Eagles defense did to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, the Bills better realize a big swing for a premier pass rusher is worth a shot. They should consider a godfather offer for Micah Parsons.

Chicago Bears
This offseason will be about new head coach Ben Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams gaining full trust in each other as Johnson constructs an ideal offense around his super talented quarterback.

Denver Broncos
The Broncos found a potential superstar quarterback in Bo Nix, and now they need to surround him with much more talent at the skill positions this offseason. Sean Payton is already talking about the need for a ā€œjokerā€ on offense, which would be huge in making things easier on Nix and opening things up for everyone.

Kansas City Chiefs
All-Pro guard Joe Thuney did an admirable job moving out to left tackle down the stretch this season, but the offseason goal for the Chiefs is to ensure they are steadier on the bookends. 2024 second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia seizing the left tackle role would be huge.

Tennessee Titans
Reportedly open to trading the No. 1 pick, the Titans have a massive choice ahead of them. Itā€™s important to not be too eager to trade the top pick, as they might be able to get a ton for it and start finally building things the right way after years of puzzling roster management.
