⚖️ DOJ investigating NFL over TV deals

The Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the NFL to determine if the league's increasingly fragmented broadcast rights violate antitrust laws, according to the Wall Street Journal.

  • The core of the probe centers around consumer affordability; with exclusive games now scattered across Prime Video, Peacock, Netflix, and YouTube TV, the paywalls have added up rapidly.

  • When you include NFL Sunday Ticket, the cost to watch every game last season was said to be in the range of $700 to $1,000+.

  • The NFL defended its model, pointing out that over 87% of games remain on free broadcast television and that 2025 was the league's most-viewed season since 1989.

Why it matters: The league generates around $12 billion per season in media revenue and holds an opt-out clause for its current TV deals after 2029. With rumors that the NFL wants to renegotiate even sooner to cash in on rising market rates, this federal probe could throw a wrench into how the league packages and sells its games to streaming giants moving forward.

🏈 Two more trades

The Eagles acquired WR Dontayvion Wicks from the Packers for a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick.

  • Philadelphia also agreed to a one-year, $12.5 million extension with Wicks through 2027.

  • This was a surprise for both sides to us—with Wicks joining A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and two other offseason additions in Marquise Brown and Elijah Moore.

  • Back in 2023, Packers HC Matt LaFleur said the “sky’s the limit” for Wicks and that he saw some Davante Adams in his game.

Remember, former Packers assistant Sean Mannion is now the OC for Philadelphia, so Wicks gives him someone familiar with the offense as the rest of the group transitions to the new attack.

The Texans are acquiring LB Marte Mapu from the Patriots in a late-round pick swap in 2027.

Also, the Colts and Pro Bowl CB Kenny Moore II have mutually agreed to seek a trade as Moore enters the last year of his contract.

✍️ Additional moves

Falcons OT Kaleb McGary has announced his retirement after missing all of last season due to a leg injury—with the former first-round pick playing all seven of his NFL seasons with Atlanta.

The Falcons pivoted to sign veteran OT Jawaan Taylor, most recently with the Chiefs. Other signings from last week:
