Aaron Rodgers signs

The first full-team mandatory workouts of the 2025 NFL calendar begin today with minicamps across the league. First, start your day with maybe the sports play of the year so far:

✍️ On the eve of minicamp…

Aaron Rodgers officially signed with the Steelers. After weeks of waiting, the four-time MVP made it official, signing with Pittsburgh for his 21st NFL season.

  • As Rodgers indicated earlier this offseason, he was not looking to break the bank on a contract—signing a one-year, $13.6 million deal that can be worth up to $19.5 million with incentives.

  • Rodgers is just five passing touchdowns away from Brett Favre (508) for fourth-most in NFL history.

  • Things are immediately interesting on the schedule, with the Steelers taking on the Jets in Week 1. Other matchups to circle include a home matchup with the Packers (Week 8, SNF) and one last trip to Chicago (Week 12).

RB Nick Chubb is headed to Houston. The star runner surprisingly doesn’t land someplace like Chicago, instead joining Joe Mixon in the Texans backfield. It’s a surprising spot for Chubb, but it might be an indication that Houston plans to be more physical and run the ball frequently in 2025—and that Chubb was eager to sign with a contender. The Browns shared a farewell video for Chubb.

The Packers released CB Jaire Alexander. After a saga over his status that’s gone on for a couple of years, the Packers and Alexander are finally parting ways after not agreeing to a revised contract ahead of minicamp. The Bills were reportedly interested in Alexander earlier this offseason, but that might have changed after drafting CB Maxwell Hairston in Round 1 and bringing back Tre’Davious White and Dane Jackson.

The Bengals are releasing LB Germaine Pratt, who finished top 10 in the NFL in tackles last season and was a team captain for Cincinnati.

Players to keep an eye on include Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey, who will not attend mandatory minicamp; and Bills RB James Cook, looking for a new contract and has reportedly “disconnected” himself from Buffalo.

🏈 More player news

The Ravens signed WR Rashod Bateman to a contract extension. Bateman gets a three-year, $36.75 million deal with $20 million guaranteed after a career-best 45/756/9 campaign in 2024.

The Chargers extended OLB Bud Dupree, signing him to a one-year extension through the 2026 season.

The Seahawks signed P Michael Dickson to a four-year extension making him the highest-paid P in the league.

Veteran WR Chris Conley is retiring after 10 NFL seasons, and he’s following his dream of becoming a filmmaker—heading to film school at Georgia where he played his college ball.

📰 NFL news and notes

The Colts officially announced team ownership transition details after last month’s death of owner Jim Irsay.

Loyalty and a hometown discount: Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin was offered $30 million per year by the Patriots during free agency—and likely could have gotten more in a negotiation—but returned to Tampa Bay on a three-year deal at $22 million per year.

Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald says Sam Darnold is their starting QB and that talk otherwise is “crazy.”

If Ravens RB Derrick Henry rushes for 2,000 yards for a second time this season, his favorite actor Adam Sandler promises he’ll put him in an upcoming movie.

Eagles RB Saquon Barkley says he’ll likely retire out of nowhere similar to one of his all-time favorites Barry Sanders. Also, Barkley got his own signature cleat, the Nike Alpha Menace 4 Elite.

The 2025 NFL preseason games airing on NFL Network were announced.

Rams sign CB Jaire Alexander
The Rams are one of those teams that feel they can win it all this season, and it’d be shocking if Alexander’s name didn’t immediately come up upon his release from Green Bay. New Rams WR Davante Adams called Alexander one of his favorite people, so that’s a noteworthy first-hand account Sean McVay and company can go to. Alexander not only brings obvious skills on the field, but he’d bring additional attitude to Los Angeles’ confident defense.

Bills trade for RB Travis Etienne
The situation with dynamic RB James Cook was mentioned earlier, and if the Bills think it’ll be a big-time headache affecting a season with Super Bowl aspirations, they might want to get creative at the position. Ray Davis is entering Year 2, and Ty Johnson was excellent in third-down situations last season—but Travis Etienne is an explosive talent whose time might be nearing its end with the Jaguars and can be a major value in a trade. If contract talks with Cook aren’t salvageable, don’t count out Buffalo doing something like this.
