A full serving of football

Cold weather across the country perfectly coincided with Thanksgiving week and big games.

ā„ļø Josh Allen takes over

On Sunday Night Football in snowy Buffalo, Josh Allen and the Bills dominated versus the 49ers. The recently-engaged Allen became the first quarterback in NFL history to record a passing, rushing, and receiving touchdown in a gameā€”with the receiving touchdown coming on a sick play by Amari Cooper to lateral the ball to his quarterback, who laid out at the pylon for the score. So, it was a touchdown that statistically Allen threw to himself. The Bills got star LB Matt Milano (bicep) for his season debut and are now 10-2, and Allen is becoming the heavy MVP favorite. On the other side, 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey suffered a likely season-ending knee injury (PCL, out about six weeks) to cap a very unfortunate year, and RB Jordan Mason will go on IR with a high-ankle sprain.

In the Thanksgiving triple header, the Sonic-and-Knuckles-led Lions held on to beat the Bears, 23-20, after Chicago had a chance to tie or win the game but did a poor job all around of managing the clockā€”leading to the firing of head coach Matt Eberflus the next day. Cowboys LB DeMarvion Overshown had a tremendous pick-six to help Dallas finally get a home win over the Giants. And unlike last year, Packers QB Jordan Love got his turkey leg after a Green Bay victory, with his squad handling the Dolphins at frigid Lambeau Field.

In the second annual Black Friday game on Prime Video, the Chiefs held on to beat the Raiders by recovering a fumbled shotgun snap that Raiders QB Aidan Oā€™Connell wasnā€™t ready for with Vegasā€”which got another outstanding game from rookie TE Brock Bowersā€”potentially in position for a game-winning field goal. While many are saying the play should have been blown dead, Kansas City is finding a way to win and are now at 11-1.

The Eagles went into Baltimore and took down the Ravens, 24-19, behind a 14-point second quarter that erased a 9-0 deficit. Ravens K Justin Tuckerā€™s uncharacteristic struggles continued, as he missed three kicks (one extra point, two field goals) and said after the game he felt like he ā€œcost us this oneā€ā€”but Jackson, who shared that his mom cussed him out for not running the ball enough, said he felt like the offense should have done more and not put Tucker in those situations.

The Texans held off a late surge by the Mac Jones-led Jaguars after Trevor Lawrence unfortunately left the game due to a dirty hit to the head by Texans LB Azeez Al-Shaair when Lawrence was sliding. This led to Jacksonville players roughing up Al-Shaair on the sideline, and Al-Shaair was ejected from the game with a suspension very likely; Jaguars CB Jarrian Jones was also ejected while defending his quarterback. Texans HC DeMeco Ryans said the hit is ā€œunfortunateā€ and ā€œnot what weā€™re coaching.ā€ Al-Shaair apologized on Instagram, and Lawrence posted on X that heā€™s feeling better after the scary moment.

ā€œIā€™m just praying for the Lord to deliver me from pick-sixes.ā€ The Broncos won a Monday night thriller over the Browns, headlined by two pick-sixes by Denverā€™s defenseā€”leading to Jameis Winstonā€™s comical post-game commentā€”and a 93-yard dime from rookie QB Bo Nix to Marvin Mims Jr. The teams combined for 952 yards and 73 points, and Browns WR Jerry Jeudyā€™s 235 yards (and a touchdown) were the most in NFL history for a player against his former team.

šŸˆ NFL news and notes

As mentioned above, the Bears fired HC Matt Eberflus after nearly three seasons with the team. The Bears are the third head coach opening this year, joining the Jets and the Saints. Bears president Kevin Warren says, ā€œThis will be the most coveted job in the National Football League this year.ā€ Warren also said that GM Ryan Poles will remain the GM.

Former Giants QB Daniel Jones signed with the Vikings practice squad, and HC Kevin Oā€™Connell says heā€™s ā€œalways been a fanā€ of the former first-round pick.

Contract extensions: The Cardinals signed RB James Conner to a two-year extension, and the Jaguars signed OT Walker Little to a three-year deal.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says heā€™s not ruling out an extension for HC Mike McCarthy, who is in the final year of his contract.

ā€œIf weā€™re gonna lose because of code words, then weā€™re not good enough anywayā€¦ I joked at him about it yesterday, I messed with him, so itā€™s good.ā€ Lions HC Dan Campbell isnā€™t worried about RB Jahmyr Gibbs accidentally posting on social media with some apparent insights from the offense on a whiteboard.

Dolphins OLB Shaq Barrett wanted to come out of retirement, but Miami elected not to activate him and does not intend to release him to allow him to play for another team.

Recent transactions around the league:

Injury updates in the past week:

Also, 49ers LB Fred Warner revealed that heā€™s been playing with a fractured bone in his ankle for several weeks.

Isaac Guerendo is the clear top waiver wire add of Week 14, and heā€™s squarely atop our waiver wire rankings. However, weā€™ll use the Consigliere Corner this week to share that it might make sense to go for 49ers RB Patrick Taylor Jr. if youā€™re unable to get Guerendo. Taylor would have definite upside if for whatever reason he sees significant snaps in the fantasy playoffs in one of the leagueā€™s top offenses for running back fantasy points. Keep in mind Jeff Wilson Jr. put up big points with San Francisco in the fantasy playoffs in the past, and Taylor can similarly get north for positive yardage in an offense thatā€™s fantasy gold for the position.
